Applewoods President Randy Furmanick shared the lessons he learned from attending the November 15 NH Bringing Back the Trades Tradeapalooza and Career Fair at the New Hampshire Technical Institute in Concord.
I always tell my kids and our team, "You learn something new every day.” November’s Tradeapalooza 2024 at NHTI was no different. I walked into the event on a cold New Hampshire morning, not knowing what to expect from the day.
Addressing the Need for Skilled Workers
Soon I found myself in a room with NH Bringing Back the Trades board members, Founder Steve Turner, guest speaker Mike Rowe, Governor-Elect Kelly Ayotte, other business owners, and the local news media. It was surreal as this wasn't a room where people were waiting to get Mike Rowe’s autograph. Rather, it was a group of people sharing their talents and working to address the rising need for skilled trade workers in our state and across the country. There were many discussions about what we are witnessing from a small business perspective; it was good to hear Mike’s recommendations on what we can all do to promote vocational-technical programs.
Uniting for the Cause
I learned that we must work together to bring recognition to the skilled trades for future generations and reduce the stigma surrounding technical education. To reach the next generation of trade workers, we need to begin breaking down the barriers between politics, business, and the media.
We need to start by getting rid of labels such as right, left, blue collar, and white collar. It’s time to unite and stop pointing fingers. It benefits all our futures by educating the younger generation about all career opportunities and guiding them on their path to success. I am encouraged by the number of curious young adults who came to our sister (Dependable Control Services) company’s booth with interest, excitement, and specific questions about what we do. It’s our job to continue to inspire and support this next generation of skilled workers.
Sharing My Story
A four-year college wasn’t the right fit for me, and it’s okay if it’s not the right fit for you. Visit our Dependable Controls Services website to hear about my career journey from an electrician to the owner of two successful companies. I ask parents raising this next generation also to read my story and think back to what ran through their minds at that age. Did you have all the answers and know exactly where you would end up? My goal in sharing my story is to inspire the next generation of skilled trade workers and share the endless possibilities available to them.
